California Beginnings

Hello from California!

It’s been a big month of new things for us. We started August in Colorado, celebrating Granny’s 80th birthday on the 1st, and then shifted gears to move out to California. Saying goodbye to Suki was sad, but she’s in good hands with Granny and Ellie (and Granny's big backyard).

> Happy reunions.

After saying goodbyes, we road-tripped out with my parents. Made a stop in Salt Lake City to see my friend from work Erik (had a great panini), saw the salt flats (not edible salt we looked it up), tried gambling in a casino (it was attached to our hotel and we immediately lost the $2 we bet), and finally landed in Davis.

> Put a few miles on the Subaru, not much out in there in Nevada.

The apartment is older but nice, we'll make it look cute, and after some online furniture hunting and coordinating movers, we’re pretty set. Initially it was paper plates and camp chairs so we were happy to see the moving truck pull in! The wall art still isn't up though and there's a concerning lack of plants so final pictures coming soon. Before my parents left, we put them to work stocking the fridge, grilling burgers, refinishing the used furniture, and generally running around doing things for us so thanks to them for the help. We also survived multiple trips to the DMV (they wanted sooo many forms) and now have California license plates with drivers licenses on the way.

> Grill or be grilled (by the sun).

We’ve been exploring the area little by little. The farmers market here is a highlight every week. There's also a Costco in the next town over and Trader Joe's two minutes away from the apartment so safe to say we're eating well. We discovered the "pluot" at the farmer's market and haven't looked back, there's at least 5 in our fruit bowl at any given moment. We’ve also tried some local spots: the Davis Creamery (they use milk from the UC Davis cows! moo) and a sushi place with a dedicated gluten free menu (woohoo). We celebrated our 3-year anniversary this past week and decided we just had to go back to the Creamery.

> Sushi! Creamery was directly after don't worry.

We also found a hiking spot not too far away which was really nice until the sun decided to try and fry us like a couple eggs. Note to self, get up really early for hikes here. We're committed to enjoying California nature while we can though, future trips to Yosemite, Tahoe, and other spots in the area are planned.

> Nice views, lots of sunscreen.

On the day-to-day side, Sahar officially started law school with intro week and already has tons of reading and classwork to do. It’s intense but she’s enjoying it, made plenty of friends too. I’ve been poking around at job opportunities to see what's out there, had a couple interviews so far but in the meantime still working at CharterUP. For fun I’ve found a frisbee group, the campus gym, and a church community that might be a good fit.

> Where Sahar will be spending many many many hours studying.

We're settling into a good rhythm here. The month has been full of new things but they're all going well. September brings Sahar's birthday, she's already counting down the days!
